Best CCTV Cameras in NZ: What We Actually Install, and Why
Every brand claims 4K, colour night vision and AI detection. Here is what we actually put on Auckland houses, what we will service but not sell, and the honest case for the cheap stuff.
The short answer
- TP-Link VIGI is our default for pure CCTV – business-grade hardware at a sensible price.
- Ajax is the pick when you want cameras and alarm in one app on one hub.
- We install and service Hikvision and Dahua, and they are fine systems – most of that work is upgrades to what is already there.
- Consumer kit (the battery doorbell brands) is genuinely fine for a rental or a single spot. It is not a property system.
- The sensor and the lens decide image quality. The badge on the box does not.
What actually separates a good camera from a bad one
Almost every spec sheet lists the same features, so they are useless for choosing. Three things genuinely differ, and none of them are printed on the box in large type.
- Sensor size, not megapixels. A larger sensor gathers more light per pixel. A 4MP camera with a good sensor beats an 8MP camera with a small one, in the dark, every time – and the dark is when you need it.
- Lens aperture. An f/1.0 lens takes in roughly four times the light of an f/2.0. This is the difference between real colour night vision and a monochrome image with a floodlight bolted on.
- How it handles backlight. A camera pointed at a doorway with bright sky behind it will show you a silhouette unless it can handle the dynamic range. Almost every disappointing front-door shot is this.
Everything else – AI person detection, two-way audio, the app – is genuinely useful and genuinely commoditised. Every brand below does it adequately.
What we install
TP-Link VIGI – the default recommendation
VIGI is TP-Link’s business line, and it is the best value in the New Zealand market right now by a clear margin. Proper PoE cameras, genuinely good low-light performance, an NVR that does not fight you, and a free app with no subscription attached to your own footage.
The range covers what a house or a small business actually needs – turrets and domes for general coverage, bullets where you want the camera to be seen, PTZ where one camera has to cover a yard. We stock and fit the full range, and it is what goes on most of the jobs we quote.
Where it is not the answer: very large sites with specialist analytics requirements, and situations where the alarm integration matters more than the camera.
Ajax – when the alarm matters as much as the cameras
Ajax cameras are not trying to beat VIGI on price per camera and will not. What they do is run on the same hub, in the same app, under the same users as the alarm – so an activation and the camera covering that zone are one tap apart instead of two apps apart.

What we service but do not usually sell
Hikvision and Dahua
The two largest CCTV manufacturers in the world, and there is a lot of both already installed across Auckland. The hardware is capable and we install, configure and service both – including NVR setup and remote access on systems somebody else put in.
Most of our work with them is existing systems: an upgrade, a failed recorder, cameras that were never commissioned properly, or a handover where nobody left the password. If you have one and it is playing up, that is a servicing and repairs job and worth doing before replacing anything.
For a new install we will normally steer you to VIGI, on value and on how the app and NVR behave day to day. If you have a reason to want Hikvision or Dahua specifically, we will fit it properly.
The honest case for consumer cameras
The battery doorbell and stick-up camera brands get dismissed by installers, and that is not entirely fair. For the right job they are a sensible purchase and we will say so rather than sell you something bigger.
- Renting. No cable runs, no penetrations, comes with you. Correct answer.
- One spot, one question. Who is at the door of an apartment, or what is happening at the end of the drive. Fine.
- A stop-gap while you save for a real system, or while a build finishes.
Where they stop being the answer is when you want a property covered: several cameras that record continuously, keep weeks of footage locally, and are still working in eighteen months without anyone charging anything. That is a different class of product, and the monthly cloud fees on four consumer cameras add up faster than people expect. We go through the trade-offs in wired versus wireless cameras.

The thing we will not do is fit a brand because it is the one with the best margin that month. We install two lines and service two more, and if the honest answer for your place is a $200 doorbell rather than a system, that is what we will tell you at the quote.
Common questions
What is the best CCTV brand in New Zealand?
For most homes and small businesses, TP-Link VIGI gives the best image quality and reliability per dollar, with no subscription. If you want cameras and an alarm in a single app, Ajax is the better fit even though it costs more per camera.
Is TP-Link VIGI good?
Yes – it is TP-Link’s business range rather than their consumer line, with proper PoE cameras, good low-light performance and a free app. It is what we fit on the majority of the jobs we quote.
Should I buy Hikvision or Dahua?
Both make capable hardware and we service plenty of it. For a new install we normally recommend VIGI on value and on how the app and recorder behave day to day, but if you have a reason to prefer either we will fit and configure it properly.
Are cheap security cameras worth it?
For one spot, a rental, or as a stop-gap, genuinely yes. For covering a property with several cameras recording continuously and keeping weeks of footage, no – the ongoing cloud fees and the battery maintenance overtake the saving quickly.
How many megapixels do I need?
4MP to 5MP is the sweet spot for most positions. Going to 4K helps on wide scenes where you need to identify someone further away, but it triples your storage use, so it is a per-camera decision rather than a system-wide one.
Do you install cameras I have bought myself?
We would rather not, because we warrant the system as a whole and cannot do that around hardware we did not specify. If you already own a good system we are happy to service, configure and add to it instead.
