Wired vs Wireless Security Cameras: Which Should You Fit?
It is usually framed as two options. There are really three, they fail in completely different ways, and the right answer often depends on the building rather than the budget.
The short answer
- There are three categories, not two: PoE wired, WiFi mains-powered, and battery.
- PoE is what we fit by default. One cable carries power and video, nothing to recharge, nothing to drop off the network.
- Battery cameras trade reliability for easy fitting. They miss the start of events and they need charging.
- WiFi cameras are only as good as the WiFi at the camera – which is outside, through a wall, at the far end of the section.
- Wireless earns its place on rentals, brick and heritage buildings, and anywhere a cable genuinely cannot go.
The three types, honestly
PoE wired
One network cable to each camera carries both power and video. No plug near the camera, no battery, no dependence on WiFi coverage. The recorder usually supplies the power itself, so the whole system sits behind one plug and one UPS if you want it to ride out a power cut.
The cost is labour: someone has to run that cable. On most Auckland homes with a roof space that is straightforward. On a two-storey or a solid brick wall it is the expensive part of the job.
WiFi cameras with a power plug
Mains powered, video over WiFi. No data cable to run, but you still need a power point within reach – which on an exterior wall usually means an electrician anyway, at which point the cable argument is half lost already.
The real issue is that the WiFi has to be good at the camera, and the camera is outside, behind a wall, often at the far corner of the section. Indoor signal strength on your phone tells you nothing about it.
Battery cameras
Fully wireless, magnetic or screw mount, up in ten minutes. Genuinely useful in specific situations and consistently oversold for general use. They cannot record continuously – the battery would last days – so they sleep and wake on motion, which is where the problems start.
The failure modes nobody mentions
Battery cameras miss the beginning
A sleeping camera has to detect motion, wake, connect and start recording. That takes a moment, and the moment is the one where someone walks into frame. The result is footage that starts with a person already at the door, facing away. Better models buffer a couple of seconds to compensate; cheap ones do not.
Cold, damp and duty cycle
Battery life is quoted from light use. A camera on a busy driveway triggers dozens of times a day, and an Auckland winter is not kind to lithium cells. “Six months” becomes six weeks on the camera that matters most, and it is always the one on the highest, most awkward mount.
WiFi is a shared, contested medium
Four 4K cameras streaming over WiFi compete with everything else in the house and with every neighbour’s network on the same channels. It works fine until the evening, which is when you need it. Cloud-only recording
Most wireless cameras record to the manufacturer’s cloud, often on a monthly plan per camera. That means no footage when the internet is down, which is the same outage window an intruder benefits from, and it means your footage lives under someone else’s terms of service. A recorder on site keeps the recording locally and still lets you watch remotely.
And the wired failure mode, since it has one
A cut cable takes a camera out, and the whole system is only as available as the recorder it feeds. That is why the recorder goes somewhere concealed, and why we would rather it be on a UPS than not. It is a smaller failure surface than the wireless list above, not a zero one.
Which to fit, by situation

There is a fourth option worth knowing about for new builds and large sites: fully wired alarm and camera infrastructure. Ajax Fibra wired systems is the alarm side of that, and it makes sense while walls are open and never afterwards.
The compromise that usually wins
Most of the houses we fit end up mixed, and deliberately so. PoE for the cameras that have to work every night – the driveway, the front door, the rear access – because those are the shots that matter and they cannot be allowed to have a bad night.
Then one battery camera for the awkward spot: the back of the shed, the far fence line, the corner where a cable would mean a full day and a conduit run up the outside of the house. That camera is a bonus. If it dies for a week nothing important is lost.
The question that settles it. If this camera stopped working and nobody noticed for a month, would that matter?
If yes, wire it. If no, a battery camera is a perfectly sensible way to cover it – and much cheaper than the cable would have been.
Common questions
Are wired security cameras better than wireless?
For anything that has to work reliably every night, yes. PoE cameras have no battery, no dependence on WiFi coverage, and record continuously to a recorder on site. Wireless wins where a cable genuinely cannot go, or where you do not own the building.
Do wireless cameras need WiFi?
WiFi cameras do, and it has to be good signal at the camera position, not at your phone indoors. Battery cameras also use WiFi to upload. Only PoE cameras are independent of your wireless network entirely.
How long do battery security cameras last?
Quoted figures assume light use. On a busy driveway with dozens of triggers a day, through a cold damp winter, expect a fraction of the advertised life. Plan on recharging the busiest camera regularly.
Can wireless cameras record without internet?
Most cloud-based wireless cameras cannot – no internet means no recording. That is a real gap, because an outage overlaps neatly with when you want footage. Cameras recording to an on-site NVR keep working regardless.
Is PoE hard to install in an existing house?
In a single-storey home with roof access, usually not. Two-storey homes and solid brick are where it gets time-consuming, because there is no free route between levels and cables often end up external in conduit.
Can I mix wired and wireless cameras?
Yes, and it is what we most often recommend. Wire the cameras that have to work every night, and use a battery camera for the awkward spot where a cable would cost a day’s labour.
