What North Shore properties actually need

The thing that separates the Shore from the rest of Auckland is salt. Anywhere from Devonport round to Torbay, outdoor hardware lives in salt-laden air, and it shows. Cameras, sirens, housings and cable glands all age faster here, so where a camera is mounted — under an eave rather than exposed, out of the prevailing wind, sealed properly at the gland — makes more difference to how long it lasts than which brand is on the box.

Takapuna, Milford and increasingly Northcote are apartment and townhouse territory, and that changes the job completely. There is often no practical way to run cable, shared walls make some sensor placements useless, and body corporate rules may limit what goes on an exterior wall. A fully wireless system is usually the only sensible answer, and it needs setting up so it is not false-triggering off the neighbours.

Devonport and the older parts of Belmont and Northcote Point bring villas — solid walls, no cavity to run cable through, and often a heritage overlay that makes visible cabling a problem. The answer is the same as in Central Auckland: wireless, sited carefully.

Albany, Rosedale and the Wairau Valley are the Shore's commercial side. Light industrial units, showrooms and offices where the real requirement is knowing who opened up and when, so a monitored alarm with access control matters more than another camera.

Home alarms

House alarm installation on the North Shore

Most of our alarm work on the Shore is homes — a burglar alarm for a family house in Glenfield or Sunnynook, a replacement for an inherited panel nobody has the code for, a wireless system for a Takapuna apartment. We walk the property first and quote per sensor, so the price reflects your doors, windows and layout rather than a package that was sized for someone else’s house.

If you have a dog, say so up front. Pet-immune detectors, set up around your animal, are what stop the alarm going off while you are out — and an alarm that false-alarms is an alarm people stop arming. For bigger dogs the answer is placement: cover the doors and windows rather than the open floor.

We install three alarm brands and will tell you plainly which suits the house, rather than whichever is on the van:

Cameras & monitoring

CCTV camera installation & alarm monitoring

Cameras on North Shore homes are mostly about the driveway, the front door and the side gate; on business units in Albany and Rosedale it is the roller door and the yard. Either way the aim is a camera that identifies a face or a plate, not one that records that something happened. On a coastal section, where and how it is mounted matters as much as the camera itself. We install TP-Link VIGI for value and Ajax cameras where you want them in the same app as the alarm, and we service existing Hikvision and Dahua systems.

An alarm is only as good as the response to it. We connect alarms to Alarm Watch, a New Zealand monitoring bureau with a staffed 24/7 control room, so an activation reaches a trained operator who follows your instructions — call you, send a guard, or contact emergency services. Most modern Ajax, Paradox and Arrowhead panels can be connected, including many systems we did not install.

Questions we get asked

North Shore questions

Outdoor ones can, yes — salt air is hard on housings, screws and cable glands. It is mostly solved by where and how they are mounted rather than by paying more for the camera. We site them under cover and out of the prevailing wind wherever the view allows.

Yes, and it is usually a wireless system because there is nowhere to run cable. It is worth checking your body corporate rules first if anything needs to go on an exterior wall — we can tell you what that rules in or out.

Yes. The cameras and the alarm can both be viewed and armed from your phone, and a monitored alarm means someone is notified whether or not you are looking.

It depends on how many doors, windows and rooms need covering, so we quote per sensor after seeing the house. For a ballpark first, the alarm cost estimator on this site gives an instant range, and the quote itself is fixed before any work starts.

Not if the detectors are chosen and placed for it. Pet-immune motion detectors ignore smaller animals, and for big dogs we cover doors and windows rather than open floor. Sensitivity is set on site, around your pet.

Often, yes. Most modern Ajax, Paradox and Arrowhead panels can be connected to Alarm Watch’s 24/7 control room. Older panels may need a communicator upgrade, which we can check on a site visit.

All of it — Devonport and Takapuna through Glenfield and Birkenhead, up to Albany, Browns Bay and Torbay. We are based in Whenuapai, a short run along SH18 to Albany. If your suburb is not listed, ask anyway.
