How Much Does an Ajax Alarm System Cost in NZ?
Most quotes hide the detail behind one number. Here is what an Ajax system actually costs to install in Auckland, what moves the price, and where people get caught out.
The short answer

What you are actually paying for
An alarm quote is really three numbers stacked together: the hub, the detectors, and the labour to put them where they belong. Most of the variation between one quote and another is in the second number, because the detector count is set by the building, not by the brand.
A three-bedroom house on one level with a front door, a back slider and a garage internal door needs far fewer devices than the same floor area spread over two levels with four external doors. That is why a price given over the phone before anyone has seen the property is a guess, and why we do a free site assessment before quoting.
The third number – labour – is where wireless earns its money. A wireless Ajax install does not involve lifting carpet, drilling through framing or making good afterwards. Most homes are done in a day.

Anything advertised dramatically below it is usually a two-detector system that leaves half the house uncovered, or a low install price attached to a long monitoring contract.
What pushes the price up
The number of ways in, not the number of rooms
People instinctively price an alarm by house size. Detectors are placed by entry point and by the routes an intruder has to walk, so a compact house with five external doors costs more to cover properly than a larger house with two.
Photo verification
Swapping standard motion detectors for Ajax MotionCam costs more per device. It is the single upgrade we recommend most often, because it changes what an alert is worth. A notification that says “lounge sensor triggered” makes you choose between driving home and ignoring it. One that arrives with photos of the room ends the question in five seconds.
Outbuildings and range
Sheds, sleepouts and granny flats are usually still inside range – the Jeweller radio reaches up to 2,000 metres in open conditions – but they add devices, and sometimes a range extender.
Wired instead of wireless
On a new build or a large commercial site, Ajax Fibra wired systems changes the shape of the quote entirely: more labour, more cable, no detector batteries ever again. It is the right answer for warehouses and for houses where the walls are already open, and the wrong answer for a finished home.
What you are not paying for
This is the part that surprises people coming off an older system or a contract.
- No app subscription. The Ajax app is free on iOS and Android. Arming, disarming, notifications, event history and multiple users are all included.
- No forced monitoring contract. Plenty of our customers self-monitor entirely through the app. Monitoring is there if you want a trained operator responding when you cannot be reached, and it is priced separately.
- No charge for extra users. Adding your partner, an adult child or a cleaner to the system costs nothing.
- No proprietary lock-in on the install. The system is yours. If you move, a wireless system can largely come with you.
Is it worth it against a cheaper alarm?
Sometimes not, and we will say so. If the requirement is a siren that makes noise when a door opens on a small rental, a hardwired Paradox alarms panel does that reliably for less, and we install those too.
Ajax earns the difference when you want to actually know what is happening at your property while you are not there – photo verification, instant alerts, a clean app, sensors that keep working through a power cut. If nobody is ever going to look at the app, you are paying for capability you will not use.
