Ajax vs Paradox: Which Alarm System Is Right for You?
We install both, and we are certified on one and an authorised dealer for the other. So this is not a comparison written to steer you somewhere – it is the same reasoning we use on a site visit.
The short answer
- Ajax suits finished homes and anyone who wants photo verification and a genuinely good app. Wireless, fast to install, free app.
- Paradox suits new builds, rentals, apartments and larger commercial sites where hardwired reliability and zone count matter more than app polish.
- Paradox is generally the lower-cost option; Ajax generally gives you more information when something happens.
- Both are properly professional systems. Neither is a mistake. The property usually decides.
The short version
Paradox has been making alarm panels since 1989 and the reputation is earned: hardwired, dependable, long service life, sharp pricing. It is one of the most widely installed brands in New Zealand for good reason.
Ajax is newer and built around a different assumption – that you will want to know what happened, not just that something happened. Wireless first, encrypted, photo verification built into the detectors, and an app that people actually use.
If you are retrofitting a finished house and you care about alerts, Ajax alarm systems is usually the answer. If cable access is easy or the walls are open, and the priority is solid coverage at the best price, Paradox alarms is very hard to beat.

You find out what actually happened
This is the real difference and it is bigger than a spec sheet makes it look. With Ajax MotionCam, an alarm arrives on your phone with photographs of the room that triggered. You know within seconds whether it is a break-in or the cat.
Alarms fail in practice because people stop trusting the alerts. An alert you can verify does not decay into background noise the way a bare notification does.
Retrofitting without wrecking the house
No cable runs, no lifted carpet, nothing to make good. On an existing Auckland home that is often the deciding factor before anyone has compared a feature.
The app is free and it is good
No subscription to arm, disarm or get alerts. Multiple users at no cost. Event history you can scroll back through with photos attached.
Two failures at once
Storms take out power and internet together. The Ajax Hub 2 Plus carries up to 16 hours of internal battery and switches automatically to its built-in SIM when the connection drops – so the one night you most need it is covered.
Where Paradox wins
Price, without cutting corners
For a straightforward, reliable, professionally installed alarm at the lowest sensible cost, Paradox is the value choice and has been for years. On a rental portfolio, where the requirement is dependable coverage across several properties, the difference adds up fast.
New builds and open walls
If the gib is not on yet, hardwiring costs a fraction of retrofitting and gives you a system with nothing to go flat. The same logic that makes Ajax Fibra wired systems attractive on a big Ajax job applies to Paradox at a lower price point.
Large zone counts and partitions
EVO panels scale to 192 zones, 8 partitions and 999 users. For multi-tenancy buildings, or a commercial site that needs separately armed areas and a long user list, that architecture is purpose-built for it.
It is a known quantity
Thirty-plus years of panels in the field means parts, knowledge and servicing are everywhere. If you have an existing Paradox system playing up, that is usually a repair rather than a replacement – see servicing and repairs.
How we actually decide on a site visit
Four questions settle it most of the time:
- Is the building finished? If yes, wireless Ajax avoids a lot of disruption. If the walls are open, wired options are back on the table.
- Will anyone look at the app? If the honest answer is no, you are paying for capability nobody will use, and Paradox does the core job for less.
- Do you need to know what triggered it? If the property is remote, or you have been burned by false alarms, photo verification is worth the difference on its own.
- How many zones and how many separately armed areas? Past a certain size, EVO’s partition model is simply the right tool.

Common questions
Is Ajax better than Paradox?
Neither is better in the abstract – they are built around different priorities. Ajax gives you far more information when something happens and installs into a finished house without disruption. Paradox gives you proven hardwired reliability and very strong value, particularly at high zone counts.
Which is cheaper, Ajax or Paradox?
Paradox is generally the lower-cost option on hardware. In a finished home the gap narrows, because wireless Ajax needs much less labour than running new cable through a completed building.
Can I keep my Paradox panel and add Ajax?
Not directly – they are separate systems and the detectors do not talk to each other. If you have a working Paradox panel, the usual options are to service and extend it, or to plan a replacement over time.
Does Paradox have an app?
Yes – BluEye, which is licensed. It handles arming, disarming and status. The Ajax app is free and includes photo verification from MotionCam detectors, which BluEye has no equivalent for.
Which is better for a rental property?
Usually Paradox. Rentals want dependable, low-fuss coverage at a sensible price, and there is rarely someone who wants to manage a security app for a property they do not live in.
