The thing that separates the Shore from the rest of Auckland is salt. Anywhere from Devonport round to Torbay, outdoor hardware lives in salt-laden air, and it shows. Cameras, sirens, housings and cable glands all age faster here, so where a camera is mounted — under an eave rather than exposed, out of the prevailing wind, sealed properly at the gland — makes more difference to how long it lasts than which brand is on the box.

Takapuna, Milford and increasingly Northcote are apartment and townhouse territory, and that changes the job completely. There is often no practical way to run cable, shared walls make some sensor placements useless, and body corporate rules may limit what goes on an exterior wall. A fully wireless system is usually the only sensible answer, and it needs setting up so it is not false-triggering off the neighbours.

Devonport and the older parts of Belmont and Northcote Point bring villas — solid walls, no cavity to run cable through, and often a heritage overlay that makes visible cabling a problem. The answer is the same as in Central Auckland: wireless, sited carefully.

Albany, Rosedale and the Wairau Valley are the Shore's commercial side. Light industrial units, showrooms and offices where the real requirement is knowing who opened up and when, so a monitored alarm with access control matters more than another camera.
